Creating a Global Community in Southern California

With Westcliff’s student body representing 120 countries and nearly 6,000 students, Henslick understands the importance of cultivating an inclusive environment. “Our students come from all over the world,” she says, emphasizing how the diverse mix of nationalities enriches campus life. Her team works tirelessly to make sure every student, regardless of their background, feels they belong.

For example, every quarter Henslick and peer mentors lead a highly anticipated “Beach Day” outing where international students can get away from the classroom, soak in the sun, and enjoy one of the many perks of living along the coast. “Our beach days are some of the most popular events we host,” she says. For many students, it’s their first time seeing the Pacific Ocean, and Henslick views these outings as more than just a break from studies. The events, which feature activities like s’mores-making and sunset-watching, are designed to create lasting memories. “These experiences are not just fun—they’re transformative,” she explains. “Students leave with connections and memories that go beyond the classroom.”

In addition to organizing impactful student events, Henslick arranges beach leadership retreats specifically for her team of peer mentors. Like the recent trip to San Onofre, these outings are designed to deepen connections in a relaxed environment, where mentors can unwind and enjoy California’s scenic coastlines. By building a close-knit, supportive community within the team, these retreats empower peer mentors to inspire and confidently guide the students they serve.

Clubs: More Than Just Activities

In addition to large-scale events, Westcliff’s student clubs offer opportunities for students to find community through shared interests. Henslick views these clubs as an essential part of the university experience, especially for international students adjusting to life in the U.S. “Clubs are a space where students can share their hobbies and passions with others who might come from completely different backgrounds,” she explains. Students also have the ability to suggest and create new clubs, which has become more common every year.

The impact of these clubs is particularly significant for international students who may initially find the transition daunting. “Coming to the U.S. is terrifying for many of our students,” Henslick says. Through the thirteen clubs that Westcliff has to offer like the acclimation or cultural cooking club, these students find a support network that makes Westcliff feel more like home.

Fostering Confidence and Connection

By focusing on personal interactions, Henslick and her team help students feel seen, valued, and further trust in their abilities. “It’s more than just a job—it’s about building relationships that inspire confidence and help students take risks,” she adds, highlighting how integral these connections are to student success. Mahum Zaidi, a peer mentor who works closely with Henslick in Student Life, describes her as a comforting presence, saying, “Tayler’s warmth and openness make every person feel seen and valued. She brings joy and kindness with every smile, every act of help, and every heartfelt hug. She truly brings light to the university experience, creating a supportive space that bridges the distance from family and friends for students navigating their journeys at Westcliff.”

Taking the Time to Listen

One of the keys to keeping student life at Westcliff engaging and relevant is paying close attention to student feedback. Henslick believes in the importance of creating programs and events that resonate with students’ needs and interests. “Student feedback is critical,” she emphasizes. “We exist to serve them. If there’s something they want to see more of or something they feel passionate about, we make it happen.”

By maintaining an open line of communication with students, Henslick ensures that the programs offered by Student Life evolve alongside the student body, reflecting their ever-changing needs and desires. Tayler’s proactive approach includes regular assessments of student interests and adapting programming to meet those needs. This adaptability fosters a dynamic environment where students feel involved and valued.

Looking Ahead

As Westcliff University continues to grow, so does Henslick’s vision for Student Life. She’s eager to explore new initiatives that integrate student activities with academic experiences, helping to create a well-rounded, holistic environment for students to learn and thrive. “Academics are the foundation of Westcliff,” she says, “but our goal is to complement that experience by providing opportunities for students to interact outside the classroom with peers from different programs.”

Henslick’s commitment to building a supportive, inclusive community is at the heart of everything she does. Under her leadership, Westcliff has become a vibrant hub of activity, where students are not only engaged but empowered to succeed. As the University continues to expand its global reach, Henslick’s role in fostering a strong, connected community will remain central to its success.
