Smiles, Sunshine, and Inclusion: Westcliff Celebrates 3rd Inclusive Sports Day

The sun was shining and spirits were high as Westcliff University hosted its third Inclusive Sports Day on April 10, 2025, at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. Held in partnership with the Inclusive Sports Foundation, the event welcomed children with disabilities for a joyful day of sports, team-building, and community connection.

Coinciding with Autism Awareness Month, the event drew nearly 400 students, teachers and volunteers who helped turn the school grounds into a vibrant celebration of unity and belonging. From the moment guests arrived, the campus came alive with warmth and the unmistakable energy of a community coming together for a shared purpose.

Westcliff University President and CEO Dr. Anthony Lee opened the festivities with heartfelt remarks. “Today is one of my favorite days of the year,” Dr. Lee said. “It’s an opportunity to give back, foster genuine inclusion, and instill confidence in these amazing kids. I’m proud Westcliff University is part of such an impactful event.”

Game On, Westcliff!

Student-athletes from across Westcliff’s athletic programs — including men’s and women’s soccer, men’s basketball, baseball, surfing and women’s wrestling — showed up in full force. As a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character-approved program center, Westcliff Athletics emphasizes integrity and service both on and off the field. That spirit was on full display as each team hosted interactive stations tailored to spark fun, connection and accessibility for every participant.

A crowd favorite was the penalty shootout led by the soccer teams, where Dr. Lee stepped into the goalie box — playfully letting a few goals slip by, much to the crowd’s delight. Wiffle ball, tarp surfing, and carnival-style games rounded out the morning’s activities, accompanied by the DJ’s upbeat soundtrack.

The atmosphere buzzed with laughter, cheers and plenty of high-fives as student-athletes and kids teamed up across stations. Women’s wrestling head coach D’Rell Gist said the energy was infectious, especially watching the bonds that formed in real time.

“You could see the excitement these kids had, and our athletes matched that enthusiasm at every station,” Gist said. “My most memorable moment was meeting a kid named Chris, who challenged some of our wrestlers to a flipping contest. He was so athletic, flipping multiple times in a row — it really made everyone’s day.”

Small Moments, Big Impact

Leticia Luz Lobo, a student volunteer, shared a more tender moment that captured the essence of the day.

“The kids were so happy playing at every station, and we all couldn’t help but smile with them,” she said. “One moment that stayed with me was when a child wearing the same Los Angeles Angels hat as mine pointed and said, ‘We’re the same!’ Those little things truly warmed my heart.”

As the event came to a close, students gathered for an exciting prize giveaway. While a few lucky winners took home exclusive raffle prizes like a signed baseball, basketball or a soccer team jersey, every participant received a Westcliff goodie bag filled with Warrior gear, ensuring no one left empty-handed, and everyone left smiling.

The impact of Inclusive Sports Day stretched far beyond the field. It was a celebration of ability, joy and togetherness that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. Events like this continue to reflect Westcliff University’s deep-rooted commitment to inclusivity and meaningful social responsibility.

Westcliff extends a heartfelt thank-you to the Inclusive Sports Foundation, Edison High School and, of course, to every student, volunteer and participant who helped make the day so special.
