How One U.S. Army Veteran Found Her Purpose Helping Others at Westcliff University

Paulene Gabuten, U.S. Army veteran and Westcliff University’s Military Outreach Advisor, helps fellow veterans navigate education benefits and start new tech careers.

When veterans visit Paulene Gabuten’s office at Westcliff University, they meet someone who already understands the maze they are about to enter. As the university’s military outreach advisor and a U.S. Army veteran, she has walked that path herself.

A few years ago, Gabuten and her husband, both Army veterans, left Texas for California in search of a new beginning. Education was central to that goal, but finding a university that truly understood the rhythm of military family life proved difficult. Most campuses they visited were designed for someone else’s schedule, not for working adults balancing family, transition, and careers.

“We looked at ten different schools and none of them fit our schedule,” she said. “When we found Westcliff, it was a yes right away.”

That single yes changed everything.

From Service to Student: Finding a Veteran-Friendly University

Westcliff University was the first place that felt designed with veterans in mind. Its flexible hybrid model — meeting in person once every eight weeks — allowed Gabuten to pursue her degree without putting her life on hold. Evening classes let her stay present for her family, manage her side business, and continue growing academically.

She chose the Bachelor of Business Management program with a concentration in finance. For Gabuten, the decision was both practical and personal.

“I own properties in Texas and California and wanted to learn how to manage them better,” she said. “The business management program gave me the knowledge and confidence to handle my investments.”

That combination of flexibility and relevance reshaped her future. What began as a search for convenience became a rediscovery of community  and a place where she could transform her experience into purpose.

Turning Experience into Purpose

At first, Gabuten focused on adjusting to life as a student and rediscovering her academic rhythm. But as she connected with staff and fellow veterans, she realized her story could help others facing the same uncertainties she once did.

Her leadership and initiative didn’t go unnoticed. Westcliff’s staff saw her potential and invited her to join as a VA work-study assistant, helping veterans navigate benefits and enrollment. The role quickly became more than a job.

“When I help another veteran get their benefits approved or start classes, it feels like I am helping family,” she said.

Each veteran who sits across from her reminds her of that same feeling of relief when someone finally says, “I can help.” What began as academic guidance evolved into something deeper. It evolved into a shared sense of mission rooted in service and trust.

How Westcliff Supports Veterans Using the GI Bill

Behind Gabuten stands a team that shares her commitment. Assistant Director of Military and Veterans Affairs Cristian Cabrera and Veteran Student Support Coordinator Richard Perez have helped build a network where veterans can thrive. Together, they guide students through every step, from understanding GI Bill® and Yellow Ribbon Program benefits to choosing degree paths that align with career goals.

“From my first day, Cristian and Richard were there,” Gabuten said. “They handled my transcripts, helped with my schedule and made the whole process simple. It showed me that Westcliff really cares about its students.”

Professors, too, understand that military students juggle unique responsibilities. Evening and hybrid courses offer structure without sacrificing flexibility, allowing veterans to advance their education while maintaining balance.

“The professors here really know what they are doing,” Gabuten said. “They are not just teaching from the book. They have lived it.”

That real-world experience, paired with empathy, keeps veterans returning to Westcliff. It is a university built on a community that feels like home.

Helping Veterans Transition to Civilian Life

The transition from military to civilian life can feel uncertain. The structure that once defined every day disappears, and finding direction can be daunting. Gabuten understands that feeling well.

“When you are transitioning out, it is hard,” she said. “You are trying to find your direction again. Westcliff gives you that.”

Her conversations with new students often begin with paperwork but end with renewed confidence. Many arrive unsure of what to study or how to apply their benefits. Gabuten listens, shares her story and helps them see education as more than a next step, rather, as a new mission.

“You earned those benefits,” she said. “Do not let them go unused. Education gives you direction when everything else feels uncertain.”

You Are Not Alone

Every veteran who walks through Gabuten’s door reminds her of how far she has come. The soldier who once searched for a school that fit now helps others find belonging. What started as her own pursuit of education has grown into a mission that changes lives.

“Transitioning is not easy, but you do not have to figure it out alone,” she said. “We have staff that always want to make an impact for the students.”

At Westcliff University, that promise continues — one veteran, one story, one success at a time.
